Coaching helps you decide what to do next and follow through. Therapy helps you understand and heal what's weighing on you. Both involve talking, but they do different jobs.

Not sure which kind of help fits
Maybe you've felt stuck for a while. You're not sure if you need a plan, or someone to help you sort through feelings. That's a fair question, and a common one.
Asking it doesn't mean something is wrong with you. It means you're paying attention to what you need.
Coaching looks ahead, therapy looks deeper
The choice isn't about how serious your problem is. It's about what kind of help fits right now.
A life coach assumes you're capable and looks forward. The focus is on what you want and what you'll do next. A coaching session usually ends with a next step.
A therapist is a licensed professional. Therapy looks at what happened and how it affects you now. It can help you heal from pain, loss, or patterns that keep coming back.
Neither one is better. They're built for different moments, and many people use each one at different times.
When coaching is a good fit
Coaching tends to fit when you feel mostly okay but stuck on something specific. For example:
- Making a decision you keep putting off
- Planning a change, like a new job or a move
- Preparing for a hard talk with someone
- Building a habit that keeps slipping
- Following through on something you said you'd do
When a professional is a better fit
A licensed therapist or doctor is trained to help with things coaching can't. Reach out to one if you notice any of these:
- Feelings that won't lift for weeks
- Past events that keep coming back and getting in the way
- Thoughts of harming yourself
- Questions about medication or your health
- A relationship where you don't feel safe
If any of these sound like you, that's not a failure. It's useful information about the kind of support that fits.
Three questions to help you choose
If you're still unsure, try these questions. Answer them in a few words each.
- What do you want most right now? Is it a plan, or is it to feel better inside?
- Where does your mind keep going? Is it the next few weeks, or something in the past?
- How are your days going? If daily life has felt heavy for weeks, start with a professional.
If your answers point both ways, that's okay. You don't have to pick one forever.
Example
Someone is offered a new role in another city. They feel excited and nervous in equal parts. They want to list their options and choose by Friday.
That's a good fit for coaching. If the move also stirs up grief that won't lift, a therapist could help with that part.
You can use both at once
Coaching and therapy don't compete. A therapist can help with what's underneath. A coach can help with the choices in front of you.
Some people see a therapist every few weeks. In between, they use coaching to plan and follow through on day-to-day goals. If you do both, it can help to tell your therapist.
What an AI coach is, and isn't
An AI coach is coaching support, not therapy or crisis care. It doesn't replace a therapist or doctor, and it doesn't give medical advice. Read more about where coaching stops and other help starts.
